Welcome
This is the coniferous forest site where you can find all of your needed information below in these tabs. We are glad that you chose this ecosystem and we hope you will enjoy our tour around. Temperate evergreen forests are common in the coastal areas of regions that have mild winters and heavy rainfall, or inland in drier climates or montane areas. Many species of trees inhabit these forests including pine, cedar, fir, and redwood. The understory also contains a wide variety of herbaceous and shrub species. Temperate conifer forests sustain the highest levels of biomass in any terrestrial ecosystem and are notable for trees of massive proportions in temperate rainforest regions. Larger carnivores highly sensitive to human activities including low intensity hunting; large number of species highly sensitive to logging and fragmentation of natural forests, particularly late-successional species; late-successional species and features typically regenerate slowly; many temperate forests require periodic fires to maintain successional processes and many species; exotic species can have extensive and significant impacts on natural forest communities.
About the Biome
Today, the coniferous forest covers about 2.4 X 10 km of montane forests in North America, Europe, and China. Smaller areas of temperate coniferous forests are found in the montane regions of Korea, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. The abiotic factors of this region are temperature, elevation, type of soil, rainfall, season, latitude, distance from the sea, terrain, types of rocks in the areas, volcanic activity nearby, and the side of the mountain the forest is on. The native plants of the forest are: Cedar, Cypress, Douglas-fir, Fir, Juniper, Kauri, Pine, Podocarpus, Spruce, Redwood and Yew trees and a wide variety of herbaceous and shrub species, which live off the plentiful rainfall and adapt to the forest's cold, long, snowy winters and the warm, humid summers. The animals who inhabit the area are the following: the Mink, Silver fox, Lynx, Sable, and Beaver and between these animals, the competition for food is on. The Silver fox's main competitor for food is the Lynx which enjoys the same type of food, the Mink and the Sable. Between the Mink and Sable, grasses and small insects.

Warnings
One threat to coniferous forests is acid rain which problems persist in the coniferous forests, particularly in northern Asia and Canada. Acid rain forms from deposited materials in the atmosphere mixing with rain and precipitation. Acid rain causes slowed growth, injury and even death to coniferous forests. Forests in higher elevations are at an especially higher risk for browning and dying needles and even trees. The rain seeps into the soil, rivers, streams and lakes. Coniferous trees like the fir are some of the most sought-after timber in the world. Clear-cut logging also occurs to create ski slopes, housing, new roads and landfills. Removing the trees means that creatures living there lose their habitat and food source, endangering them or causing their extinction. There are many endangered species in this biome including: The Grizzly Bear, Siberian Tiger, Spotted Owl, Siberian Crane, and the list goes on. There is definitely a fear of climate change in this biome. Human encroachment like logging and clear cutting remove the forest's canopy, changing its climate by removing the misty precipitation from the trees that leaves the forest moist and cool.
Analysis
The temperate coniferous forest is very important globally. They are also essential for our
well-being. Forests and trees are crucial for life on Earth - they help stabilize the world's
climate and provide a home to thousands of plants and animals. Forests are also an
important source for raw material. For example, there are people worldwide that depend
on wood so they can cook and have heat. Woods that come from the forest are also used
for furniture, pulp, paper, and other wood-based products. Forests also help purify our water by
maintaining the water cycle. Forested areas reduce storm runoff and help clean our local
water bodies. The temperate coniferous forest is the largest terrestrial habitat, and
we need to take care of it before its too late.
