Location
Deciduous forests can be found in the eastern half of North America, and the middle of Europe. There are many deciduous forests in Asia. Some of the major areas that they are in are southwest Russia, Japan, and eastern China. South America has two big areas of deciduous forests in southern Chile and Middle East coast of Paraguay. There are deciduous forests located in New Zealand, and southeastern Australia also.
Weather and Climate
The average annual temperature in a deciduous forest is 50° F. The average rainfall is 30 to 60 inches a year. The word "Deciduous" means "falling off or out at a certain season". That explains why deciduous forest means a forest in which the leaves fall off the trees when the winter comes. The average temperature is around 50° F (about 10° C). The average rainfall is 30-60 inches (75-150 cm ) per year. You can find all four seasons: winter (cold and frosty), summer (hot and humid), fall (cool and breezy), and spring (warm and breezy). There is about a 6 months of growing season.
Animals
Different habitats of the deciduous forest have different animals. During the winter seasons it is usually hard for animals to find food so the animals must adapt to situations like these. Some animals in the deciduous forest consist of the black bear, fox, brown bear, blue jay, raccoon, and gray squirrel.
Plants
The plants of a Deciduous forest are mostly lichen, moss, ferns and trees. There are usually five levels of the forest. The first level, also known as ground level, is made up of lichen, and mosses. The second level is made up of herbs and flowers, such as, toothwort, wild onions and wild sarsaparilla. The shrub their is the third layer. Some shrubs is may contain are blueberry bushes, azaleas, and mountain laurel. The last two levels contain the smaller trees and the canopy trees at the top. A few trees in a deciduous forest are oak trees, maple trees, dogwood, birch trees, magnolia trees, and sweet gum trees.

Warning
The Temperate forest biome is one of the most altered biomes on the planet. By looking at a map you will see that our population density very closely corresponds to the distribution of Temperate Forests. We use the wood of these trees for construction, firewood and art. They have been cleared for farming and to build communities. These human activities have led to the decline and loss of these forests in many parts of the world.
